At the Australian Institute of Eye Surgery our approach is to help you make an informed decision about laser vision correction and your eyes. Our objective is to ensure that you know as much about the procedure as possible. That is why our surgeons and staff strive to provide you with the most thorough pre-operative examination and consultation, so that you have all the information you need to decide if laser vision correction is the right treatment for you. Our surgeons are very careful in deciding which potential patients are good candidates for laser vision correction and they will discuss with you, your expected outcome and the inherent risks associated with the procedure. The dramatic results our patients experience is not only the result of the procedure itself but also a consequence of the pre-operative and post-operative care provided by our surgeons and staff. Our surgeons have often been called upon to correct complications that have occurred in vision correction procedures performed by other surgeons. The Australian Institute of Eye Surgery is so confident of our doctors' vast clinical experience and training that we stand behind our laser vision correction results with The Lifetime Commitment, for which most patients are eligible. We are the only vision correction centre in Australia to provide this commitment. Our whole organisation is committed to professional excellence. As a result the Australian Institute of Eye Surgery has been the choice of doctors and optometrists, Olympians and world champions, tradesmen and teachers, police officers and professors, in fact men and women of all skills. The criteria for a successful vision correction procedure are the following. Our surgeon and his experienceDr. Ronald Binetter, our chief refractive eye surgeon, is one of the
most experienced LASIK surgeons in Australia. He has performed over 5000
LASIK procedures and was one of the first eye microsurgeons to be certified
to perform LASIK. He now instructs other surgeons in LASIK and microsurgical
eye procedures and has helped to pioneer LASIK and other vision correction
procedures in Australia. Many of our staff and their families have had
LASIK or other vision correction procedures performed by Dr. Binetter. The TechnologyAt the Australian Institute of Eye Surgery we chose the Bausch & Lomb 217C-LASIK Excimer laser. It is the first refractive work station in the world designed specifically for LASIK and is acknowledged as one of the most advanced lasers available. This system comprises three sophisticated devices. The 217 Excimer LaserThis advanced spot scanning laser allows the surgeon increased flexibility to treat shortsightedness, longsightedness, astigmatism of these and presbyopia. The PlanoScan 2000 software minimises tissue removal, thus optimising the treatment for each patient and increasing long term safety. The flying spot for each pulse removes 39 millionths of an inch in twelve billionths of a second producing an extremely smooth corneal surface. This aids accuracy of the treatment and the rapid return of vision. The result is a very precise and safe change to your sight. The unique infra-red based active eye tracker has created a procedure which is safer for the patient and provides the surgeon with more precise control of the treatment. The eye tracker detects changes in the position of the eye and is capable of following and compensating for this movement in an appropriate time scale so that the laser positions the next pulse at the desired location. Approved by the influential United States Food and Drug Administration, this laser has produced the most accurate results ever presented to the U.S. FDA and remains the bench mark against which other lasers are compared. Orbscan II Diagnostic SystemUnique in its diagnostic capability, this device is used to image the cornea as part of your comprehensive assessment. Using over 9000 reference points, the thickness, curvature and elevation of your cornea is analysed. The surgeon can then assess both external and internal corneal abnormalities should they exist. This will aid in planning and simulating surgical treatment and monitoring the outcome or may allow the surgeon to advise you not to have LASIK but another vision correction procedure. Hansatome MicrokeratomeThis is the leading Microkeratome used in LASIK today. It creates the corneal flap and is designed for maximum consistency, reproducibility and safety. It's purpose designed features allow accurate flaps to be lifted in both normal eyes and in small and deep set eyes. Our Centre and Staff Our operating theatre complex is licensed by the New South Wales Department of Health and has been granted full accreditation for excellence by the Australian Council of Health Standards. Our staff are supervised by both the Director of Nursing and our Medical Director. Our equipment is regularly revised and maintained by the manufacturers.
